How do people account for private employment pensions? Do you exclude it or do you include it and if so what category do you include it in?
We have included it in our own carbon footprint at Carbon+Alt+Delete, under activity 3.15 “investments”. Our bank publishes good data on the footprint of their investments, so we could use a supplier-specific emission factor for it.
Just one additional note: in Belgium we have “collective pension plans”, where the employer puts money directly in a pension plan as part of the salary. So that’s why we included it in the corporate carbon footprint of Carbon+Alt+Delete.
I’m not sure what you mean with private employment pensions. If that is different from what I describe above, their might be arguments to treat it differently.
I include it as routine in 3.15 for my clients, based on employer contributions. however in terms of emissions factor I had to create a custom one based on spend-based factors elsewhere
Thanks all!
And that’s exactly right @KennethVandenBergh - when I talk about private pensions, I am referring to workplace pensions i.e. money that employers put into pension plans on behalf of their employees.
