Upstream transport - ballast schip

For one of our customers, we are currently estimating emissions for the scope 3 category 4 ‘upstream transport’. This customer transports raw materials from Australia to Ghent via cargo ships. A cargo ship departs from a port in Australia, sails to Antwerp and from Antwerp to Ghent. We have the distances and weights travelled per route (i.e. between Australia and Antwerp and between Antwerp and Ghent). Now it appears that the cargo vessel first sails from another port to the port of loading in Australia, in addition, for this trip the cargo vessel carries a ballast for stability (which is no longer there once the cargo is loaded). Do we need to chart this extra trip, and if so, how?

Hi Liesen,

typically for our project, we only account for the emissions resulting from the transportation of goods purchased by our customers, considering the loading location as starting point. Additionally, I believe the distance between the two Australian ports could be considered negligible, along with the associated emissions, especially when compared to the distance between Australia and Europe.
