I’ve been looking for more concrete guidelines on target setting when a recalculation is triggered, specifically regarding target years.
When a company triggers a target recalculation due to a change in structure (merger, acquisition), are they allowed to change the target year, as long as they keep the target aligned with robust climate science and in line with the SBTi reductions guidelines?
An example:
Company X commited in 2025 to reduced Scope 1 and 2 by 42% by 2030 from a 2024 baseline year.
In 2028 recalculation is triggered due to an acquisition
Could company X commit to a Scope 1 and 2 reduction of 70% by 2035 from a 2024 baseline year?
From what I understood so far in the guidance is if it is within the 5-10 year period of the target setting, this would be allowed as long it aligns with SBTi reduction pathways. Has anybody had experiences with recalculations, and could they clarify this for me?
