My client is a railway construction company. In order to calculate the scope 1 emissions from their heavy equipment, they do not have the fuel consumption details per equipment, only the hours worked per equipment. We are wondering if we can use the hours worked per equipment (for a first go) to calculate the CO2 emissions based on the fuel and the power of the equipment ?The idea arises from a tool (from the government) that is used here in Flanders (Belgium) to calculate the nitrogen emissions based on working hours and kWh of an equipment. Anybody who has experience in this ?
The methodology you outlined is similar to what is sometimes used for use of sold products.
I believe it is ok to use a first try - however I would advise that they look into ways they can start to collect activity data.
Does the company not have invoices relating to fuel purchased for this equipment that may have information on the amount of fuel purchased?
Hi , Thanks for your input. At the moment fuel is one bill, no distinction between the equipment. Definitely an action they will have to start working on. The biggest blockage is to get the engagement from the users to log the fuel consumption of the equipment they use. So very straightforward as an action, but a behavioural change process that might take more time.
